Gala Darling is an inspiration to fashionistas across the globe. Described as a “downtown Carrie Bradshaw” by Elle magazine, a “tattooed Miss Manners” by The Bargain Queen and a “New York society girl” by Filament, the 27-year-old has created a massive online following prompted by her personal philosophy of radical self-love with a dose of hot pink glitter.
Here, Gala speaks to us about her favourite high heels, who she looks to for design inspiration and how she’s become a successful style blogger by simply being herself.
When it comes to shoes are you a sparkle or sensible kind of gal? Definitely sparkle! I am immediately enamoured with anything covered in glitter or crystals, and of course, the higher the heel, the better. It’s madness to be a shoe girl in New York City, though. Uneven pavements and cobblestones can test the mettle of even the bravest woman!
What inspires you when it comes to design? I like anything flamboyant, with a sense of humour. I don’t believe in taking life too seriously and my personal style reflects that, for sure!
Who are some of your favourite shoe designers? Christian Louboutin, Balenciaga and Miu Miu do great shoes at the high end. I also adore Irregular Choice for their sense of play.
What do you love the most about fashion? I love the transformational quality of clothing; I love the way you can put on a dress or a pair of shoes and feel like an entirely new person. Sometimes just doing this is the boost we need to really step into our own power. I have to say, fashions come and go and are not so interesting to me—what I am most captivated by is personal style, and pieces which endure. I could wear sparkly high heels every day of my life and it would still be relevant to my aesthetic!
Who are some of your favourite style icons? I am inspired by so many different types of style! Karl Lagerfeld, Mary-Kate Olsen, Little Edie Beale, Diana Vreeland, Edie Sedgwick, even Hunter S. Thompson inspires me.
